Two of the victims were said to be pregnant women. The deadly incident has highlighted the centrality of Honduras in the U.S.-backed drug war. by: Democracy Now Hundreds of people rallied in Houston on Thursday to protest the acquittal of a former police officer in the videotaped beating of an African-American teenager. On Wednesday, the officer, Andrew Bloomberg, was found not guilty by an all-white jury in the beating and stomping of 15-year-old burglary suspect Chad Holley. Video taken of the March 2010 incident shows Holley being stopped by a police vehicle. After Holley falls to the ground, he is clearly seen surrendering and putting his hands behind his head. But instead of placing him in handcuffs, Bloomberg and six fellow officers proceed to attack Holley with stomps and kicks. "It seems we have become jaded, willing to accept in too many instances, young black people being grossly mistreated," says NAACP President Ben Jealous. [Transcript to come. by: Democracy Now A federal judge has granted class action status to a lawsuit opposing the New York City Police Department’s controversial stop-and-frisk program, opening the door to legal recourse for hundreds of thousands of people targeted by police. The judge’s ruling cited the city’s "deeply troubling apathy" toward the constitutional rights of New Yorkers. A recent study by the New York Civil Liberties Union found the NYPD program is racially skewed and largely ineffective, with blacks and Latinos making up 87 percent of people stopped last year. by: Democracy Now Benjamin Jealous, the president and CEO of the NAACP, joins us to react to the new audio recordings and documents released in the investigation of Trayvon Martin's killing. The evidence indicates a fight occurred between Martin and his alleged killed George Zimmerman, but police determined the deadly encounter was "ultimately avoidable" if Zimmerman had not pursued Martin. An autopsy also shows Martin died from a single gunshot wound to the chest fired from "intermediate range." Reacting to a recording of Martin's girlfriend recounting her phone call with Martin moments before his death, Jealous says: "It's heartbreaking to listen to his childhood girlfriend talk about the experience of listening to him be hunted on the street just before he was killed. It dramatizes for people the experience of millions of young people across this country every year when they are racially profiled, whether it's by community watch volunteers or by cops." by: Democracy Now Florida prosecutors have released a trove of documents, photographs and audio recordings revealing new details about the night George Zimmerman shot dead the unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida. We broadcast excerpts of the chilling recording of the police interview with Trayvon's girlfriend. She and Trayvon were talking on the phone in the moments leading up to his death. "I know he was scared," the girl recounts. "I told him, 'Keep running!' ... He told me the guy was getting real close to him. And the next I hear is [Trayvon saying], 'Why are you following me for?' … I heard this man... say, 'What are you doing around here?' ... And I call Trayvon, 'Trayon, what's going on? What's going on?' ... Then, I am calling him and he didn't answer...You could hear someone had bumped Trayvon...I was still screaming, I was saying, 'Trayvon!  by: Al-Akhbar آخر تحديث 5:20 PM بتوقيت بيروت | خاص بالموقع وجّه المندوب السوري في الأمم المتحدة، بشار الجعفري، رسالة باسم بلاده إلى الأمم المتحدة وأمينها العام بان كي مون، لفت فيها إلى أن بعض المناطق اللبنانية، المجاورة للحدود مع سوريا، أصبحت «حاضنة لعناصر إرهابية من تنظيمي «القاعدة» و«الإخوان المسلمين»، الذين يعملون على تقويض خطة المبعوث الخاص للأمم المتحدة ذات النقاط الستّ». وأرفق الجعفري رسالته بمجموعة من المعلومات الموثقة المتعلقة بتزويد الجماعات الإرهابية في سوريا بالسلاح وتهريب الإرهابيين عبر الحدود اللبنانية – السورية، حيث تحدّث عن عدة مستودعات للسلاح والعتاد أقيمت في بعض المناطق اللبنانية الحدودية، كاشفاً أنّ هذا السلاح يصل إلى الأراضي اللبنانية بطرق غير مشروعة، «إما عن طريق البحر، أو في بعض الأحيان من خلال استخدام طائرات تابعة لدول معيّنة، قبل تهريبها إلى سوريا بذريعة أنها تحمل مساعدات إنسانية للمهجرين السوريين في لبنان». وكشف البيان أنه بتاريخ 13/3/2012 رست باخرة حربية مجهولة الهوية مقابل منطقة جونية، حيث قامت زوارق صغيرة بنقل الاسلحة التي كانت على متنها إلى البر بهدف نقلها الى سوريا، إضافةً إلى مراكب محملة بالأسلحة رست في مرفأ «أكوا مارينا»، قرب جونية، تم تفريغ حمولتها ونقل الأسلحة المتواجدة على هذه المراكب إلى عكار ثم الى وادي خالد تمهيدا لتهريبها الى سوريا. وفيما أبرزت الرسالة ضبط الجهات اللبنانية المختصة للعديد من محاولات تهريب الأسلحة إلى سوريا، أشارت إلى أنّ «مقار الجمعيات الخيرية التي تشرف عليها الجماعات السلفية وتيار المستقبل في المناطق اللبنانية، المتاخمة للحدود السورية، تحولت الى اماكن مخصصة لاستقبال وايواء عناصر ارهابية من تنظيمي «القاعدة» و«الاخوان المسلمين» من السوريين وغيرهم ممن ينطلقون من الاراضي اللبنانية لتنفيذ عملياتهم الاجرامية في سوريا، ويفرّون عائدين إلى تلك المقار». وكشفت الرسالة أن «نحو 50 ارهابيا موجودون في بلدة القلمون بطرابلس بقيادة خالد التنك وخالد حمزة وزكريا غالب الخولي»، موضحةً أن هؤلاء يحملون بطاقات ممهورة بشعار الأمم المتحدة، «يستخدمونها للمرور عبر حواجز الجيش اللبناني وبحوزتهم اسلحة مختلفة، وينطلق هؤلاء للقيام بعمليات تخريبية ضد سوريا من طرابلس الى بلدة السفيرة بجرود الضنية، حيث يستقبلهم عناصر من الجماعات الاسلامية المتطرفة لتسهيل مرورهم الى بلدة أكروم في سهل عكار ومنها الى وادي خالد للدخول الى الاراضي السورية بهدف القيام بعمليات ارهابية». وفي سياق متصل، تحدثت الرسالة عن معلومات تفيد بأن قائد الجيش السوري الحر العقيد رياض الأسعد «وصل الى لبنان مؤخراً للتحضير لاقامة منطقة سورية عازلة انطلاقاً من الأراضي اللبنانية». وفيما أكد الجعفري في ختام رسالته أن استمرار عمليات تهريب الأسلحة والإرهابيين إلى سوريا عبر الحدود، بدعم وتمويل وتغطية من بعض الدول العربية والاقليمية والدولية، دون أيّ مساءلة، لا يشكل فقط انتهاكاً لكل القوانين والأعراف الدولية، وفي مقدّمتها ميثاق الأمم المتّحدة، بل ويتعارض بشكل تام مع خطة المبعوث الخاص للأمم المتحدة إلى سوريا كوفي أنان، من حيث المساهمة المباشرة والمتعمّدة في زعزعة الاستقرار في سوريا وتهديد استقرار المنطقة ككل. إلى ذلك، طالب الجعفري الأمم المتحدة بـ«اتخاذ جميع الاجراءات اللازمة وفقاً للمسؤوليات المنوطة بها لمعالجة هذه القضية الخطيرة للغاية من خلال وقف تلك العمليات ومساءلة كل الاطراف المسؤولة عن ذلك بما في ذلك الدول التي تقدم الاسلحة او تقوم بتمويل وتسهيل تهريب الاسلحة والارهابيين الى سوريا»، متمنياً تعميم هذه الرسالة بوصفها وثيقة رسمية من وثائق مجلس الأمن.
